Abstract

The term moderate Islam cannot be separated from the "war on terror" ultimatum issued by President G. W. Bush in response to the "nine eleven" incident. This ultimatum became the doctrine that became the reason the US government invaded countries that were not subject to its policies. At the same time, the West is also carrying out propaganda against Islamic countries through mass media networks and diplomacy using the term Islam terrorist, as well as the anti-term, namely moderate Islam. Islamic countries that are subject to Western policies, Islam is included in the terms of moderate Islam, and vice versa automatically Islam is terrorist Islam. To get out of the political pressure of the US and its allies, many countries are trying to present a new face of Islam that suits Western tastes. Indonesia is one of the promoters of the Western version of moderate Islam. Classical and contemporary literature studies on the books of commentary on QS. Al-Baqarah/2:143, which conceptually and contextually contains the word wasath, is found to have a different meaning from the Western conception of moderate. Only implicitly the word wasath can be equated with the word moderate. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has made ten (10) principles of wasathiyah al-Islam (Islamic moderation). However, the Western version of Islamic moderation is competing for a place vis a vis the Qur'anic version of the Islamic moderation concept. The results of the literature review on Islamic moderation show the conception inherent in Muslims which is based on goodness and justice. Muslims are chosen by Allah subahanahu wata'ala because they are the best people based on justice and proportionate in all vertical and horizontal affairs. The Hudaibiyah agreement is one of the concrete forms of Islamic moderation in the Qur'anic version of the da'wah strategy. The clauses of the agreement proffered by Suhail bin Amar were ratified as one of the concrete forms of Islamic moderation that must be proportional to muamalah to his opponent who offers a peace agreement. The same applies to the manhaj (method) of da'wah in Indonesia. The da'i preach Islam proportionally, gradually, accommodate the mad'u culture, and are not extreme to the left or to the right.
